The cobblestone generator is the first thing you should build on any Skyblock island. It turns your single bucket of lava and your one water source into an infinite block supply, which is the difference between an island that grows and an island that stalls on day one.
Here is the short version, then the upgrades worth making.
The basic generator
You need a bucket of lava, a bucket of water, and eight or so blocks of something solid. Dirt works. Cobblestone works once you have any at all.
- Dig a trench three blocks long and one block wide.
- Place water at one end.
- Place lava at the other end.
- Where the two flows meet, cobblestone forms.
- Mine the cobblestone. It regenerates immediately.
That is the whole mechanic. Water flowing into lava produces cobblestone, and because the source blocks are never consumed, the generator runs forever.
The mistake almost everyone makes first
Do not pour lava directly onto water, and do not pour water directly onto a lava source block. Either one will convert your lava source into obsidian, and you have just lost the single most valuable item on a starter island. Dig the trench first, place the water, and only then place the lava at the opposite end so the flows meet in the middle rather than on top of each other.
If you do turn your lava into obsidian, you are not completely stuck — you can usually buy or trade for another bucket — but it will cost you a chunk of your early progress.
Making it comfortable to use
A bare trench works but it is slow to mine and easy to fall into. Two changes fix that:
- Wall it in. Place blocks around the generator so you cannot walk into the lava while mining. This sounds obvious until the first time you do it.
- Stand in the right place. Position yourself so the cobblestone forms directly in front of you at chest height. You want to hold left-click and not move at all.
At that point you have a generator you can farm for several minutes without thinking, which is enough to get your first real platform built.
Upgrading to a proper cobble farm
Once you have an efficiency pickaxe and some spare blocks, there are two upgrades worth the materials.
Multi-generator setups. Nothing stops you from building four or six generators side by side, each with its own water and lava pairing. If you are mining manually, you can step between them without waiting for any single one to regenerate.
Automated collection. Put a hopper under a piston-driven generator and you can have cobblestone pushed into a chest without standing there at all. This is where Skyblock stops being about clicking and starts being about design. How far you can take this depends on the server — some servers restrict redstone-heavy or hopper-heavy builds to protect performance, so check the rules before you invest hours into a large build.
Why the cobblestone matters
Cobblestone is not the point. What it buys you is:
- Island area. Almost every Skyblock island is built on generated cobble at some stage.
- Furnaces and tools. Stone tools, furnaces, and the first stage of almost every recipe.
- Early income. On most economy servers, cobblestone sells for very little per block but it is completely unlimited, which makes it a reliable floor under your balance while you work out what actually sells well.
That last point is worth understanding properly. A server where you can sell cobblestone for meaningful money is a server whose economy will inflate quickly, because the supply is infinite. A well-tuned server prices cobblestone low on purpose. If you are trying to work out whether a server’s economy has been thought about, the cobblestone sell price tells you a lot.
On Asteria
Asteria’s starter quests walk you through the generator in the first few minutes, and island upgrades later increase what your generator can produce. Cobblestone sells low by design — the money in the season comes from farms, trades, and the upgrades you build toward, not from holding left-click on a wall of stone.
If you are new to the mode entirely, start with what Skyblock actually is, then read the economy guide for what is actually worth selling.
